OnePlus launches this years OnePlus 8 with 120Hz QHD AMOLED display

OnePlus marketers unveiled their latest 2K resolution 120Hz OLED display at a conference in Shenzhen earlier this year, which will be featured on the OnePlus 8 models later this year.

On January 13, 2020, OnePlus held a press conference in Shenzhen to unveil the company's first 120Hz refresh display, co-developed with Samsung. This was confirmed by the OnePlus leader at this year's CES and added that this is the best smartphone display this year. The high refresh rate is another leap compared to last year's OnePlus peak model (90Hz).
Like the OnePlus 7 Pro, the new display comes with an AMOLED panel with a resolution of 2K / QHD + (3120x1440). The demonstration also revealed that the new mobile display will have the highest absolute color accuracy (<0.8 JNCD - Just Noticeable Color Difference), which also beats the current peak, iPhone 11 Pro Max <0.9 JNCD, and stands out from the average 2 JNCDs of current top mobile phones.

Other interesting things have come to light about the new Fluid Display:
  • independent MEMC chip
  • 120Hz image refresh
  • 240 Hz touch sampling
  • 1000-bit luminance
  • <0.8 JNCD
  • Automatic brightness control with 2096 adjustable levels
  • 10-bit color management (supports about 64 times more colors than today's average phones)
  • Support for HDR content
  • Factory color calibration

Solutions such as MEMC technology have long been present in smart TVs. The function of the chip is to adjust the video recorded at 24 or 30 frames per second to the 120Hz display. The real-time algorithm inserts extra frames into the original video while watching video, allowing you to improve content at 60 or 120 frames per second while minimizing consumption.
Pete Lau also posted a comparative video on Twitter showing how the MEMC chip works:

For the time being, much remains to be known about the future OnePlus 8 models, and the company has only leaked some important information from the display. But, for example, there was no information about whether there would be a camera cut-out with a built-in fingerprint scanner. There are several concept device pictures circulating on the Internet, but none of these have been confirmed by the Far East giant.
